Are
you protected? Unfortunately far too many people
do not take internet and personal computer security
seriously enough. The threat of viruses, trojans,
and spyware is all too real. Often your computer
can be infected without you even knowing it.
Nowadays the goal might not be
wiping out your hard drive. More likely the goal
is to use your computer as a "zombie" to
send spam or, in the case of spyware, to feed
you advertisments in the way of "popups".
You know about popups, right? You visit a site
and an ad window pops up. Very annoying. Do you
know it may not be the website that's doing it?
It could be spyware on your own computer.
It's imperative that you have
anti-spyware and anti-virus software installed
on your computer and kept up to date. Below is
a list of popular programs for fighting viruses,
trojans, and spyware. You'll also find a list
of the latest security threats from Symantec
and some useful tools for removing malicious
programs.
A firewall will protect you from outside
programs installing themselves on your
computer or other people accessing your
files. I recommend Windows XP's built in
firewall as a safe way to go (be sure to
check Microsoft's update site).
ZoneAlarm by
Zone Labs is a really good free firewall
Check out the software
listed above or do your own reseach, but
don't be caught without protection. It's
a small price to pay to avoid major headaches
later.
